History

First Steps Crèche and Preschool began as a small but vital service in the heart of the Ballybeg community, born out of a collective need for essential childcare and early education facilities. In the early years, the Ballybeg area was a developing community, and there was a strong sense of togetherness among the first residents. As the community grew, so did the need for local services like childcare and educational facilities.

Our Timeline

St. Saviours Preschool

1977

In October 1977, St. Saviours Preschool Playgroup opened its doors in a small prefab building in Ballybeg Square, with just 21 children between the ages of 3 and 4. The preschool was set up by a dedicated group, including Susan O’Connor, Ann Reidy, Breda Elliott, and Sr. Cait O’Leary, who laid the foundations for what would later become First Steps.

Fundraising Journey

1998

The Playgroup operated successfully for over two decades, but by 1998, it was clear that the community needed a larger, more permanent solution. A group of passionate workers embarked on a fundraising journey, walking to Dublin to raise vital funds for what would become First Steps Crèche.

First Steps Opens

1999 – 2000

With the help of government funding and Carmel Staunton as the new Childcare Manager, the vision started taking shape. Construction began in 1999, and in March 2000, First Steps Crèche officially opened its doors with a grand ceremony attended by President Mary McAleese and her husband. The event was a proud moment for the Ballybeg community, celebrated with the sound of bagpipes marking the occasion.

New Extension

2002

By 2002, it became apparent that the Crèche needed more space to accommodate the growing demand. Under the leadership of Carmel Staunton, an extension was added to the building, further expanding the capacity to meet the needs of the community. The reputation of First Steps spread across Waterford City, and the Crèche soon became one of the most popular and trusted early education providers in the area.
